New Beginnings: a practical guide to setting up a Community Parenting Scheme

Crime Concern/South Side Family Project

The South Side Family Project is a community-based project which recruits and trains local parents to offer counselling and befriending support to other parents who are experiencing a range of family problems and difficulties. The project’s Director, Penny McKissock, has written this guide with Crime Concern for other groups thinking of setting up a Community Parenting Scheme in their area.

The guide looks at some of the key issues and information needed to set up a parenting scheme, including sample letters, job description, checklists and codes of practice. It explains the need for parenting support, drawing on previous research and giving brief examples of support work within the South Side Family Project itself.

New Beginnings looks at project needs, developing a project plan, fundraising, staff recruitment, training and appraisal, referral systems for parents in need of support and monitoring and evaluation. Appendices include the policies and code of ethics that the South Side Family Project has in place – these include confidentiality, child protection, capability, disciplinary, health and safety, and grievance policy as well as staff contracts.
