British Retail Consortium Annual Retail Crime Survey 2004/05

The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) 12th annual Retail Crime Survey captured information about crimes affecting retailers during 2004 from 13,360 retail outlets in the UK, who between them account for 42% of total UK retail sales. The survey details each major type of retail crime, giving risk rates for each category of retailer. The 2004 survey was published in October 2005.

The full Retail Crime Survey reports in detail on each major type of retail crime, giving risk rates for each category of retailer per 100 outlets, per 1000 employees or per £1 million of turnover as appropriate. There is separate reporting for the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector for each type of crime. The survey contains details of how the retail industry is joining with other agencies at a local level to form community crime reduction partnerships to combat retail crime.

Key points from the survey include:-

  • Number of incidents of known theft by customers up to 3,385 per 100 outlets, from 2,866 in 2003.

  • Estimated total cost of retail crime up from £1.96 billion in 2003 to £2.13 billion in 2004.

  • Estimated cost of thefts by customers up to £589 million (£410 million in 2003).

  • Estimated cost of thefts by staff up to £498 million (£282 million in 2003).

  • Estimated cost of crime prevention measures by retailers down to £710 million (£960 million in 2003).

  • Robberies against retailers down to 4 per 100 outlets from 8 in 2003.

  • Incidents of physical violence against staff up by 14% over 2003.
