Business Crime Partnerships
Many different types of business partnerships exist to help businesses work together to reduce and prevent crime. Examples include:
Business Crime Reduction Partnerships (BCRP) - bring retailers and businesses together with police and local authority representatives to exchange information on known offenders. Initiatives include radio link schemes between retailers and businesses as well as the sharing of crime prevention advice. An example of this is the work carried out by the Action Against Business Crime Group (AABC).
Shop Watch - is a scheme where shop floor staff are trained as Special Constables to combat retail crime. Police, retailers and local people are working together to make communities safer. The initial pilot was in Camden. Another scheme was launched in November 2004 in Oxford/Regent Street and another in Birmingham on the 10th February 2005.
Pubwatch - the licensed trade’s equivalent of Neighbourhood Watch. It is a group of local licensees coming together to set acceptable standards of behaviour for people using their premises and to agree common policies on dealing with the minority that ignore the standards set.
Truck Watch - an anti-crime initiative, of the Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association in partnership with the police supported by sponsoring companies.
'Forecourt Watch' – provides an early warning system to retailers about crimes being committed on forecourts, as well as providing details of suspects and their vehicles. You may be interested to take a look at the Milton Keynes Initiative on MOWP.
Business Improvement Districts (BIDS) - Is a partnership arrangement through which local authorities and the local business community can take forward schemes which will benefit the local community, subject to the agreement of ratepayers. There is a home office toolkit on BIDS.
Crime Matters- A new national website that helps businesses prevent and tackle crime has been launched by a Northamptonshire based company in association with the Action Against Business Crime Group and Northants Police.
The Crime Matters website provides specific solutions to a variety of different crimes effecting businesses, such as anti-social behaviour, fraud and violent crime.
Users of this site can access free information on how best to prevent crime and there will be specific links to companies that can provide the most appropriate security measures.
Safer business awards – nationally recognised standard replacing the Safer Shopping Award (SSA).
Safer parking schemes (formerly secure car parks) is an initiative of ACPO, aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.
