Responsibility for data protection issues rests with the Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, who has published a CCTV Code of Practice that has a number of recommendations regarding his interpretation of the Act with regard to CCTV. Copies of this document are available at www.dataprotection.gov.uk or direct from the Information Commissioner's Office on 01625 545745.
The Code of Practice sets out the standards to be met in order to comply with a set of eight legally enforceable data protection principles and makes recommendations on good practice. The principles include ensuring that data is processed fairly and lawfully, for limited purposes and not in any manner incompatible with those purposes, and is processed in accordance with individuals' rights.
Alternatively, you can view the code of practice on the Information Commissioner website. http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/eventual.aspx?id=437

When used as part of a regular review process it should help to ensure that the CCTV system remains compliant with the requirements of the Act.
