What you can do

This section covers some of the areas you may need to consider when installing and using a CCTV System.

CCTV Business Process

If you handle personal information, you have a number of important legal obligations to consider.

Legal issues relating to CCTV with regards to privacy and current Data Protection and Human Rights Legislation are handled by the Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas.

They have published a CCTV Code of Practice that has a number of recommendations regarding his interpretation of the Act with regards to CCTV. The Code of Practice sets out the standards to be met in order to comply with a set of eight legally enforceable data protection principles and makes recommendations on good practice. The principles include ensuring that data is processed fairly and lawfully, for limited purposes and not in any manner incompatible with those purposes, and is processed in accordance with individuals' rights.
