Background

With the new confidence target for police, a refreshed crime strategy due and initiatives such as Real Help in Hard Times, there has been a change in the landscape for Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships in England and Community Safety Partnerships in Wales. It is therefore an ideal time to bring partnership representatives and stakeholders together to explore the vital role played by partnerships in achieving confidence in their local communities and tackling the perception of crime and disorder.

The Home Secretary will be communicating her vision for tackling crime, highlighting achievements to date and key milestones and priorities for the future, including the Government’s expectations of partnerships. She will be joined by other senior ministerial colleagues who will demonstrate how their departments are working together to support the crime reduction and confidence agenda.

Other specialist speakers will provide information and detail on areas of interest to you including updates on recent policy issues across the spectrum of crime and drugs and how clear communication of action to the public impacts on public perceptions and confidence.

The Home Office will also be launching:

  • The National Support Framework for partnerships, including unveiling specific support products
  • A Passport to Evaluation”, a publication on how to evaluate crime reduction initiatives
  • A communication support package to assist in improving public communication and perception issues
  • An effective practice compendium – showcasing how partnerships have embraced the new partnership regulations and hallmarks.

In addition to key-note speeches and panel sessions, we will be showing case studies from across the country to enable sharing of best practice and ideas as well as providing time for you to put your questions to speakers and to meet and talk to each other. Partner stakeholders will also be exhibiting to demonstrate latest initiatives and projects.

We will be running several masterclasses, interactive and discussion sessions over the two days, looking at different issues in more detail. When you register, you will be asked if there are any particular issues you would be interested in exploring and we will do our best to shape the agenda to take account of any suggestions we receive.

We will be sending out more details of the interactive sessions nearer the time to allow you to choose the ones you are most interested in attending. Topics that are likely to be included are:

  • Working together – how do partners work together to include local partners and include probation, joining as a responsible authority later this year
  • Drivers of Crime and ASB (drugs and alcohol) – obtain a better understanding of how partnerships are working to tackle these aspects of crime / ASB, and what more support is needed
  • The Six Hallmarks – using the hallmarks to develop more effective partnerships
  • Communication & Community Engagement – launch of the communications support toolkit and case study exchange
  • Local accountability – working within the new CAA framework and the role of HMIC
  • Building public confidence – the role of public messaging in building public confidence
