Asset recovery

Police performance 2006-2009

The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 gives the police and other law enforcement agencies powers to deprive criminals of the benefits of their crimes. This is achieved mainly by obtaining cash forfeiture orders and confiscation orders in the courts. The total value of orders obtained by each police force in England and Wales in each of the last 3 years, and the cumulative total over the 3 year period is set out in the attached performance league tables. The performance of each force is measured by the value of orders obtained per 1000 population.

Other law enforcement agencies including the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and HM Revenue and Customs as well as the main prosecution agencies, also have asset recovery powers.

Further information on asset recovery performance in each Local Criminal Justice Board area in England and Wales can be found by opening the attached link: http://lcjb.cjsonline.gov.uk

The police are making increasing use of these powers to take the cash out of crime. The public can also help to make sure that crime does not pay. If a member of the public has information or suspicions that someone has money or property or other assets which have come from criminal activity, they can contact Crimestoppers or their local police.
