Criminal damage
Alcohol and criminal damage case study
During Summer 2006 Police conducted a focused operation in Wakefield targeting alcohol related incidents. The summer months, particularly during the school holidays, are notorious for calls giving details of young people drinking in public places. The force report a clear link between youth drinking and subsequent instances of violence, criminal damage and antisocial behaviour.
Prior to the start of the initiative the Schools Liaison Officers visited a large number of schools to discuss alcohol, antisocial behaviour and crime with young people. Letters were produced for the schools to distribute to parents highlighting relevant issues.
During the period of the operation there were notable reductions in criminal damage and violence. There was, however, a marked increase in the number of calls relating to antisocial behaviour. This increase had been anticipated, because of a sustained media strategy requesting the public to contact the police or council hotline to report such incidents. This led to a more focussed deployment of resources. Given its success, the project was extended until Bonfire Night.
