Crime Concern Annual Report

Crime Concern’s Chief Executive, Nigel Whiskin, has made a plea for crime reduction not to be pushed out of the national consciousness in the shadow of ‘courts, cops and corrections’ while launching the Crime Concern annual review.

Since the 2001 General Election there has been an increased focus in the news media on street crime and mobile phones. Mr Whiskin made clear his concern that focusing on these problems may push crime reduction off the action agenda. He said that we know what can be done to achieve a 25% reduction in the national crime figures and that the challenge is about inspiring local partnerships and local communities to harness their resources in replicating what works.

The Crime Concern annual review, launched by Mr Whiskin as he was making his comments, showed how partnerships working closely with the local community can bring about real reductions in crime. The report cites examples, such as:

  • 60% fall in recorded crime on the Bellamy Estate, Mansfield

  • 21% reduction in vehicle theft in Southampton

  • 58% reduction in burglary rates in Wolverhampton

  • 33% reduction in robbery in Stoke

The report also outlines progress made against each of Crime Concern's 7 objectives over the past 12 months.
