Crime Reduction Programme

Effective Schools Management

This document is published for archival/historical purposes. It will not be updated.

This initiative aims to reduce offending now and in the future by improving schools’ management of pupils’ behaviour and reducing truancy and exclusion. The initiative complements the DfEE (now DfES) pupil inclusion programme.

Bids were invited from single school or multiple projects and 38 schemes, encompassing 103 separate schools, were selected for funding. Including the costs of evaluation £12.2m has been designated for the programme.

The programme was due to run for two years starting in September 1999 when the successful projects were announced. However, some projects were delayed and will continue until March 2002 although detailed evaluation will cease in July 2001. Follow up visits will continue beyond this time with findings amalgamated with the final reports from the Project Initiation and Development Teams which are due in autumn 2001.

Interim reports will be considered by Project Managers in the Home Office before being circulated to partners in DfES and the Assembly for Wales. Reports from Local Evaluation Teams (LETs) will contribute to an over-arching report to be produced by a National Evaluation Team (NET) with publication due in April 2002.
