Crime Reduction - Helping to Reduce Crime in Your Area

Domestic Violence: An MPs Guide

Everyone should be able to live without fear of violence and abuse, but we know that too often vulnerable people, especially women and children, live in fear in their own homes. One in four women will be affected by domestic violence during heir lifetime. It's a cowardly crime that cuts across all sections of society - often behind closed doors with victims feeling powerless to stop a cycle of physical and emotional pain and abuse. As part of Domestic Violence Month 2007, the Home Office has published the "Domestic Violence: An MPs Guide" booklet.

The guidance has been developed to provide MPs with information on what they should do if approached by a constituent experiencing domestic violence. This publication is a valuable introduction and resource for every MP to engage with and signpost constituents to local and national domestic violence organisations. The guide contains information on;

  • recognising domestic violence and abuse;
  • what to do if a victim seeks your help;
  • legal remedies for victims of domestic violence and;
  • tackling domestic violence in your constituency.

The guide provides vital information to raise awareness and enables MPs to engage with their constituents, whilst also communicating that domestic violence is a serious crime that should not be tolerated. By proactively addressing domestic violence in their constituencies, MPs can help to prevent domestic violence in their community and society at large.

The supplementary guide provides additional information on what practical help is available for victims of domestic violence; the national support services that can be accessed; the legal and statutory options that are available to victims and also outlines what can be done to assist those victims with insecure immigration status
