Second National Alcohol Conference

27 & 28 November 2007

The 2nd National Alcohol Conference was held in Leeds at the end of November 2007, bringing together a wind range of key note speakers to give their insights into the best ways to tackle the problem of alcohol related offending.

The speakers included:

Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable, West Yorkshire Police - officially opened the event.

Ziggy Macdonald, Head of the Anti Social Behaviour and Alcohol Unit – Overview of the National Alcohol Strategy
This session started with an overview of the main aims and objectives of “Safe. Sensible. Social". Then the next steps in the National Alcohol Strategy, followed by a review of progress in delivering the main priority actions, including who the Unit have been working with to achieve this. Concluding with an overview of the current political climate and likely implications for public policy.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison - ACPO – An overview and update on the ACPO position in relation to alcohol and licensing
Topics such as PASS, under-age sales, polycarbonate, the role of enforcement in delivering change and ACPOs view of the new Alcohol strategy were covered.

William Atkinson, Head Teacher – Phoenix High School
William is a man with a formidable reputation in the education world - an Ofsted poster boy for what a head teacher should be like. The inspiration behind the Lenny Henry Character in the 1999 BBC Series of Hope and Glory, William Atkinson will talk about how he turned failing West London's Phoenix High School around.
