This briefing by the Local Government Association (LGA) looks at the substance misuse (drugs) issue from four viewpoints. It composes (and answers) a number of questions on children and young people, communities, treatment and availability. The report is aimed at elected members and is intended to inform them of the current state-of-play and to act as an aide-memoir.
Title: Key questions on substance misuse
Author: Local Government Association
Number of pages: 4
Series: Safer Communities
Date published: 2003
The report opens by stating a number of recently published statistics that underline the scale of the drugs problem faced in the UK. It then outlines the statutory duty and local structures that exist to develop and implement strategies to reduce crime and tackle substance misuse.
The main body of the report then takes the form of a question and answer briefing on the 4 topics outlines above. Sample questions include:
When an ex-prisoner who was using substances/drugs leaves prison … what local arrangements are there to ensure that they are reintegrated into society effectively?
Do you know how citizens are able to express their views on drug/substance misuse issues and how to feed these into the local planning structure?
How do you know that police and their fellow partnerships are tackling local drug markets effectively?
The answers to these questions and a host of others can be found in the full report
