consultation
On
20 April Security Minister Lord West announced the
launch of the Crowded Places consultation, with an extra
£5million pledged to protect the public from the threat

National Tackling Drugs
Week: 8 - 12 June
In
the run-up to National Tackling Drugs Week, local
partnerships and police forces are planning activities
which will highlight the work they do to tackle drugs
and reduce the harm caused by drugs. Agencies involved
include Drug and Alcohol Action Teams/Substance Misuse
Action Teams, Crime and Disorder Reduction
Partnerships/Community Safety Partnerships, and
Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

Kenny Milne supports Violence Against Women and Girls
(VAWG) public consultation
Scunthorpe
United FC defender Kenny Milne visited the VAWG roadshow
bus on 18 April and signed up to the White Ribbon
campaign 'These hands are not for hurting'. The
White Ribbon campaign seeks to mobilise men to end
men's violence against women.

Launch of 2008 Drugs
Strategy: one year on booklet
On
21 April Home Office Minister Alan Campbell launched the
2008 Drugs Strategy: one year on booklet which sets out
the significant progress made since the launch of the
drug strategy. It has been published on the drugs.gov
website and was circulated to key stakeholders and
delivery partners to support their communications and

National DIP and PPO
conference planned for June 09
The
Home Office is planning a joint DIP and PPO national
conference on 18 and 19 June at the ICC in
Birmingham.
Agenda details are being finalised,
but it will be a workshop format spanning two days
looking at core issues including topics from
International Organization for Migration (IOM) to
information sharing and stakeholder management.
Attendance will be by invitation. |

New
Programme Director For the Home Office Drug Intervention
Programme (DIP)
Sally Richards, acting Director of
the Home Office DIP has been appointed on a permanent
basis to the post which includes directorship of both
DIP and the Prolific and other Priority Offender (PPO)
Programme.

New measures to support
victims of sexual assault
Minister
Vernon Coaker has announced new measures to improve the
investigation and prosecution of rape and support for
victims. This includes up to £1.8 million of new funding
for Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and
Independent Sexual Violence Advisers (ISVAs), and help
for police forces to ensure all victims are seen by a
specially trained officer within an hour of
reporting.
A National Police Improvement Agency
(NPIA) 'best practice' guidance for the police and Crown
Prosecution Service (CPS) on investigating and
prosecuting rape is to be published this summer and
specific rape sessions are part of the Violence
Against Women and Girls consultation programme.

New community TV station to
tackle crime
The
newly-launched Thurrock Community Network TV will
provide crime prevention advice and information as part
of its local news coverage. The TV network was funded by
the Home Office through the National Police and
Partnerships Improvement Fund (NPPIF).
TV screens
have been put up at ten venues across the borough and
will show news, the weather, sports information and
crime prevention messages with advice on how people can
avoid becoming victims of offences like burglary.

Communities to benefit from
seized criminal assets
On
14 April the Home Office announced a £5.5 million cash
boost for police forces across England and Wales. A 2006
incentive scheme allows the police and recovery agencies
to retain half of all cash they seize from criminals.
Criminal assets confiscated between October and December
2008 totalled £31.8 million, half of which is to be
shared between police, prosecutors, courts and other
agencies. |

Latest crime statistics
published
Quarterly
crime statistics published on 23 April show that crime
has remained stable compared to the year before.
The statistics, based on British Crime Survey (BCS)
interviews and police records show that violent crime,
domestic burglary, vandalism and car theft were all
comparable to the same period in 2007. The risk of being
a victim of crime also remained stable, at a historical
low of 23%.

Community success against
anti-social behaviour in Newham
Home
Office Minister Alan Campbell visited Snowshill Estate
in Newham (East London) to learn about the work done to
successfully rid it of crime.
The
estate was once plagued by anti-social behaviour but has
been turned around through innovative partnership work
involving the local authority, neighbourhood policing
teams, businesses, local residents and government
funding. Newham Council's anti-social behaviour hotline
has shown an overall fall in crime in Newham with latest
figures showing a 12.6% drop in the last six
years.

North
East Violent Crime Conference
The
Government Office for the North East and the Home Office
Tackling Violent Crime Programme held a violent crime
conference for delegates from local authorities, police
and voluntary sector organisations on 2 April.
Delegates
considered initiatives to tackle alcohol related violent
crime in the home and night time economy. They proposed
the conference become an annual event and agreed to form
a ‘virtual’ violent crime regional network to continue
regional communication and sharing effective
practice.

Carlisle police to support SAFE
(Sports Activity Fitness and Exercise)
scheme
From
22 April, police officers and PCSOs in the west of
Carlisle are tackling anti-social behaviour by providing
free activity sessions at a new youth club at the
Richard Rose Morton Academy. It forms part of the SAFE
scheme which provides youngsters with something positive
to do in a safe place on a Friday night. The scheme will
benefit youths aged 11-17 and will be open to anyone who
wishes to participate.
