Home Secretary's first speech on tackling crime
On 2 July, the Home Secretary Alan Johnson gave his first speech on crime at the 'Tackling Crime - Taking Action - Building Confidence' event hosted by the Home Office.
The event focused on the achievements made over the last 12 years on policing and reducing crime.

New Learning Zone Events Diary
A new Learning Zone Events diary is now available on the Home Office Crime Reduction website. The diary is an invaluable tool listing training events, conferences and networking opportunities from a range of public and private sector bodies. It will also provide information on what is happening locally and nationally.
Approved organisers will be able to post their own events and will have direct access to targeted markets.

Joint Home Office/MoJ
drugs guidance published
The Home Office and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) have published a joint guidance document entitled 'Drug Misusing Offenders: ensuring the continuity-of-care between prison and community'.
The guidance is a key outcome from the Drug Strategy Action Plan and addresses identified gaps in the management and coordination of the care provided to drug misusing offenders who transfer between community-based and prison-based treatment schemes.

Launch of Operation Vigilance programme
Minister for Crime Reduction Alan Campbell has announced a 3 million pound package to help 35 areas tackle and prevent burglary and personal robbery.
The 'Operation Vigilance' programme includes the provision of pre-emptive support, training and additional resources for areas across the country that have seen a rise in burglary and robbery over the last 12 months.
The crime and disorder reduction partnerships taking part are: Leeds, Barking & Dagenham, Tameside, Redbridge, Portsmouth, Bolton, Kirklees, Leicester, Peterborough UA, Derby, Havering, Cambridge, Bradford, Enfield, Waltham Forest, Stockport, Merton, North Lincolnshire, Salford, Croydon, Southend, Calderdale, City of Westminster, Bromley, North East Lincolnshire, Central Bedfordshire, Trafford, York, Wycombe, Basildon, Bexley, Doncaster, Sheffield, Manchester and Nottingham.

Launch of new ASB Action website
Home Secretary Alan Johnson has launched a new website aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) and seeing what has been done in your area.
The new ASB website will allow anyone to find the person or team in their area who can tackle local problems with anti-social behaviour.

Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards 2009
Do you know anyone who deserves to be nominated for a Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Award? The Awards recognise people who have made an outstanding contribution to tackling drugs.
You can nominate a team or individual for an award - colleagues, family, community leaders, service users and ex-service users - all are welcome to make a nomination. Nominees can work or volunteer within any sector of the drugs field, be that prevention, education, treatment or enforcement. Practitioners from both public and voluntary sectors are eligible, though all nominees must work for a recognised organisation.
All nominations must be received by Monday 31 August 2009.

Community Cashback to fund local projects
The Home Secretary has launched a new pilot fund that will use money and assets seized from wealthy criminals in the fight against crime and antisocial behaviour.
The 4 million pound Community Cashback scheme will give the public a direct say on which community projects should be funded with the ill-gotten gains of criminals. People can submit their views via a new dedicated website, at neighbourhood policing meetings, and through citizens' panels.

Hampshire Police have launched a summer-long anti-social Behaviour (ASB) campaign which will see additional patrols being placed in ASB hotspots across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Justice Awards 2009
there's still time to nominate
Calling all staff and volunteers working in community safety. Get involved in this year's Justice Awards, the annual campaign to recognise outstanding achievement across the Criminal Justice System (CJS). Anyone working in the CJS is eligible, including community groups and cross agency teams, who could be prime candidates in categories such as Engaging Communities, Tackling Youth Crime or Partnership of the Year (sponsored by Crimestoppers).

UK Border Agency's Heathrow Team
Win Anti-Counterfeit Award
UK Border Agency officers from Heathrow Airport have received a special commendation award from the Anti-Counterfeiting Group.
The award, for excellence in anti-counterfeiting enforcement, was presented to the team in recognition for their achievements last year in detecting and seizing fake goods. The team successfully stopped over 550 consignments of fake items worth almost 18 million pounds from reaching the streets.

Drug Interventions Programme
Review Report published
The findings of a recent review of the Drug Interventions Programme have been published online. The review was set up to examine the strength and weaknesses of DIP's current delivery model in driving down drug-related offending and to review alternative models to maximise local ownership and sustain and improve outcomes.

North East launches Big Drinks Debate
The largest public health debate ever to be held in the North East was launched in June by the Regional Alcohol Office, Balance, at stakeholder events in Newcastle and Middlesbrough. To date, more than 3,000 people in the North East have filled in a questionnaire about their drinking habits and the damage excessive drinking is doing to local communities.

SAFE joint working in Leicestershire
Youth Council
The North West Leicestershire Youth Council successfully bid for community funding to host a series of workshops for 13-16 year olds on various community safety issues.
The Youth Council worked in partnership with the district's Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership and a local college to set up the 'SAFE' workshops. It is the first time different organisations have worked collaboratively to address community safety issues specifically determined by young people, and at an event hosted by young people for young people. The workshop's branding and logo were also designed by the young people and they made all key decisions on event management.

South Wales Police has launched its 'I know where my local officer is' campaign, which is aimed at building awareness of and engagement with neighbourhood policing.
