Securing Homes: Action Against Burglary is a Home Office programme that aims to keep homes safe from burglary. Securing Homes is about delivering advice, support and reassurance to people that there are simple steps to take to protect their home.

Free home security training and burglary prevention information is available for organisations and handy people who provide practical home security to groups vulnerable to burglary, such as: older people, low income groups, students and young adults. There is a similar but separate course for volunteer handypeople. All training is free.

The training will be carried out by Foundations who are the national body for home improvement agencies. Participants will be advised on providing practical assessments and installing appropriate security items.

Course will cover;

  • Burglary – the facts and figures
  • Inside the mind of a burglar
  • Keeping safe – practical advice and simple steps to keep homes and individuals safe
  • Carrying out home security surveys Carrying out home security jobs safely
  • Distraction burglary
  • Working with vulnerable clients

  • Voluntary and community groups providing home security services to local communities
  • Home Improvement Agencies providing handyperson services
  • Trade and professional organisations providing home security solutions to vulnerable occupiers
  • Professional handymen, locksmiths and DIY retailers
  • Landlords

There are three separate courses

  • 12 one day training sessions for employed and paid handy people
  • 12 one day training sessions for volunteer handy people
  • 6 two day training the trainersessions
