What is Community Engagement? 

Gabriel Chanan, Community Development Foundation (CDF)

Gabriel Chanan explored some definitions of Community Engagement from different sources and identified some gaps in these definitions. He also questioned whether the definitions matched the overall principles of civil renewal.

Drawing on the gaps identified, he gave examples of action not considered within the definitions and listed some policy and practice implications for wider community engagement to take place.

Community Engagement: from the centre to beyond

Irene Cole, Home Office Crime Reduction Delivery Team

Irene Cole gave delegates a view of the Home Office's approach to community engagement and the organisational structure behind this approach. She detailed a project to ensure that work was coordinated and linked to other community activities across Government and to identify performance targets. Current work and actions in the future were listed.

Margaret Geary, Regional Director, Government Office North West, outlined the role of the Government Office in the regions and their focus in relation to communities and the voluntary sector, specifically in relation to community safety and involvement. She highlighted some of the issues faced by the Government Offices.
