Workshop 2

"Overview of Managing and Evaluating a Project"
David Jayne, Crime Reduction Officer, Gedling Borough Council and Andy Callingham, Environmental Protection Team Leader.

Key points from the presentation:

  • David Jayne described how, after using a problem solving approach, Gedling CDRP had identified a need to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the Honeywood Gardens area of Nottingham.

  • In order to achieve this there was a need to adopt a partnership approach, which included a significant level of involvement by the local community. During the presentation he gave an overview of the project and how it is being monitored and evaluated.

  • Crime problems in the area were identified using problem solving methods and the findings from consultation between members of the CDRP and local people; residents, Neighbourhood Watch groups and community organisations were consulted at a series of public meetings and through community newsletters.

  • An approach to resolve crime problems in the area was devised and an Action Plan was designed which defined outcomes, solutions, partners and indicators for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

  • Some barriers had been encountered, these centred on a lack of trust by members of the community in various agencies, specifically the police and council. Tthere was also a history of lack of investment in the area.

  • An update on the scheme’s progress and its achievements was given. The key to its success is the involvement of local people which, the presenters believed, has resulted in a sense of ‘ownership’ of the initiative and contributed to its success.

Key points from the discussion:

  • Delegates involved in similar programmes, queried how lack of trust in the community had been overcome. It had been achieved by nurturing relationships between local people and the employees of the various agencies; this had included being accessible and keeping people informed.

  • The presenters had found the problem solving process invaluable in assisting them to analyse crime problems in terms of location, offender and victim and from this to determine a dedicated approach to crime reduction and improved quality of life.

  • The project had benefited from the setting of community-led outcomes at its inception. This had, in the opinion of the presenters, contributed to its success.

  • The project has resulted in the resurrection of community groups, neighbourhood watch and the provision of capital. What had been an initiative was now mainstream provision for the area by Gedling Borough Council.
