Robbery: lessons learned from the Street Crime Initiative

Stephen Finer, Street Crime Action Team, Home Office Jonathan Smith, Research Development and Statistics, Home Office

This presentation outlined the nature of the challenge that existed at the start of the initiative and the extent to which the sharp rise in robbery has been reversed.

Figures show the number of robberies in the 118 BCUs in the SCI and the presenters highlight the geographic focus of street crime as well as heightened public concern.

Issues raised covered the explosion in youth crime, mobile phone phenomenon, the link between problematic drug use and street crime, and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system. Lessons learned from the initiative so far are set out to inform future work.
