Workshop 1: Partnership planning and contribution to reducing street robbery

Points of discussion

  • Limit to what police tactics alone can achieve. Effective partnership working is increasingly important in the fight to reduce street crime. Effective partnership working is for local determination.

  • Agencies working together can prevent the committing of robberies and also provide police with information and intelligence that will lead to the apprehension of offenders. Apprehension can either be for robbery or for other offences where offenders (as is often the case), commit more than one offence and it may be easier to apprehend them for these, as opposed to robbery.

  • Important role for Crime and Disorder Partnerships at a local level - usually chaired by either the police or local authority, or jointly. Local areas need to decide whether street crime should be looked at more closely by a sub-group either dedicated to street crime or a collection of issues, such as acquisitive crime.

  • In some areas it may be appropriate to establish Pan County Strategic Groups that look exclusively at street crime, or more likely with other issues such as persistent/local prolific offenders, acquisitive, or anti social behaviour.

  • Agencies involved include: police, local authority, prison service, probation service, youth offending teams, drug action teams, health service, drug treatment services, crown prosecution service, magistrates and crown courts, victim support, education, social services and housing departments.
