Workshop 3
Cross-cutting Violent Crime
Carl Krueger and Andy Shakeshaft, Merseyside JAG
Key points from the presentation
Merseyside police experience of the Street Crime Initiative highlighted the benefits of partnership working and a joined up approach to crime problems
Led to formation of MAG (Multi Agency Group) and JAG (Joint Agency Group) approach which comprise of all partners who could be part of the solution to reducing different crime and disorder problems
Provided examples of multi-agency working (tracking an armed robber and mischief night) and the accountability of all partners, especially when tasked with specific aims etc.
Challenges to this approach included; cultural barriers to info-sharing and joint-working, selling the idea to partners, whole system approach to problem solving, Government scrutiny.
Lessons learnt include: Need for strategic buy in, compatibility of IT systems, Info-sharing protocols, community involvement and transferability of JAG, MAG process to different problems (e.g. Prolific and other Priority Offenders)
Key points from the discussion
Looked a good way forward but difficult for small partnerships
Anticipated difficulties in selling idea to partners
Information sharing is still a major barrier
