Policing Gun Crime
Supt Peter O'Neill, West Midlands Police
Supt O'Neill set out the problems of guns in the West Midlands including spatial and reputation issues, structural and cultural issues and the crime issues surrounding the use of guns. He highlighted the number of firearms incidents that were gang related and showed the West Midlands response to this, looking at intelligence, partnership/reduction, and enforcement. Supt O'Neill ended by suggesting further steps that could be taken with the corporate world, alternative lifestyles, mediation and conflict management and positive icons.

Update on the "Connected" Gun Crime Conference held in January 2004
Carole Eniffer, Home Office
Carole Eniffer outlined how the conference had come about and its format and then went on to show what has happened since the event. This included the Connected fund of small grants for community groups working to tackle gun crime, other funding through recovered criminal assets, the Connected website to provide a central information resource, and various other actions such as the 5 year minimum sentence poster campaign.

Evidence Based Approaches to Reducing Gang Violence
Gavin Butler, Government Office West Midlands and the Home Office Regional Research Team
Gavin Butler put forward the Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) as a methodology to give support to those working to reduce gang violence. He explained how the REA had been conducted and highlighted the six interventions/studies that had demonstrated effectiveness in reducing gang violence, identifying the elements common to the most effective interventions. He discussed the limitations of REA such as a lack of UK examples, and limited cost effectiveness information as well as the implications for developing both the evidence base and supporting practitioners.

Community Response to Gun Crime
Reverend Nims Obunge, The Peace Alliance
Reverend Nims talked about the work of the Peace Alliance and in particular what had led him to campaign around gangs and guns. He showed a video called "Untouchable?" which is part of a gun crime educational resource pack, developed to support Citizenship Education at Key Stage 4 in secondary schools.
