Domestic Violence and Black and Minority Communities
Sobia Shaw, Panahghar, Asian Women's Organisation

Sobia Shaw defined domestic violence from Panahghar's perspective and detailed the additional barriers, obstacles and issues which exacerbate the suffering experienced by Asian women and either denies or makes solutions and redress more difficult. These include cultural issues, stereotyping, racism, lack of sensitivity of service provision, isolation including language barriers, insecure immigration status, abduction and forced marriages. She detailed the key city wide developments that are taking place to address these issues and the work of Panahghar itself. Given the cost, both human and financial, of domestic violence, Sobia explained the need for partnership and taking responsibility to work on this important issue.
