Using ASB legislation to tackle violent crime
Bill Pitt, Head of Nuisance Strategy Group, Manchester City

Bill Pitt looked at community regeneration and the harm caused to communities by anti-social behaviour. He outlined Manchester's response to this issue highlighting the casework focus as key to the success achieved to date. Manchester has also challenged the focus of the criminal and civil justice system on perpetrators so that its mulit-agency work looks more at support for the witness to engage them in the process so that they can see why they should act against perpetrators through the support of local agencies. He gave some figures to show the level of success within Manchester through their use of frequent injunction actions.

Effective Use of Anti-social Behaviour Contracts
Helen Nixon, Rotherham MBC

Helen Nixon outlined the approach to the problem of anti-social behaviour in Rotherham, where a Safer Estates Forum meets monthly to identify individual perpetrators. Many agencies attend these meetings and may visit the homes of alleged perpetrators. This work has lead to some 223 Acceptable Behaviour Contracts being issued and Helen detailed the success rate and reduction in anti-social behaviour incidents recorded.
