Making a wish list Take a look at your own agency or your own Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. Are you sinking under the burden of juggling finances? Is your press and marketing section little more than an empty office and a chair? Do you desperately need new computers or some transport for key crime reduction staff? Before you approach any business, it is wise to take a good look inside your own organisation and clarifying exactly what it is that is most needed. Whatever your needs are, you need to be crystal clear about them, so that when you approach a business you are aware of the whole range of ways in which it could potentially contribute to your work. To help you do this, involve your organisation or partnership in drawing up a ‘wish list’. This will enable the whole team to appreciate that there is more to gain than just funding. And when you start talking to companies, it will give you a whole menu of options for discussion which you already know are feasible and which have the support of your colleagues. You will, however, need to manage expectations carefully. Drawing up a wish list is not a guarantee that you will suddenly deliver everything on that list. Be honest about this, and make sure people’s expectations are realistic.
