Considering fear of crime |

Local communities Whilst people are undoubtedly influenced by the national portrayal of crime levels – most form their perceptions of crime from their experience in the local community. Research evidence from America indicates that local communication to highlight community safety improvements in the community can help reduce fear of crime and improve the sense of local security. This goes some way to create the damaging effects of a national picture of rising crime – though it is obviously dependent on real effective action being taken in the community. Another key issue for this audience is ensuring that local communities know how to take an active part in identifying and addressing community safety issues. This type of empowerment can be as simple as ensuring that people know how to contact their local police or other agencies to discuss problems and get things done. Such activity helps reduce the sense of inevitability and helplessness to do anything about crime.
