Visuals

Using photos, graphics and other visual material will draw attention to your story and help to get your message across. Try to be creative; get away from obvious suggestions and consider something more eye-catching and unusual, as long as it is appropriate to the story.

Think creatively about a positive image. You could try:

  • Illustrating your work and trying to get some action into the picture. For television journalists, the decision to cover a story will sometimes depend on whether it provides interesting, moving pictures.

  • Involving people and local landmarks to encourage familiarity. If people see others getting involved, they’ll be more motivated to add their support.

  • An usual picture will attract attention, so don’t be limited to the obvious, aim for an image that will make people look twice.

For newspapers, don’t forget that there are other visual options apart from photographs. You could send a copy of your logo, or put statistics into a simple table to show how your area compares to others.
