Working with the news media |

Checklist 1. Know your local media – their staff, their audience and the area they cover. 2. Decide on a ‘peg’ for your story. Highlight the details that will grab the journalist’s attention and make them want to run the story. 3. Plan ahead. Identify publicity opportunities over the coming year and build them into a programme. Think about working with other groups to maximise your impact. 4. Think about audience and messages. Who do you want to reach and what do you want to tell them? 5. Consider the best way to reach your audience. Can you back up your press publicity with posters or leaflets to reinforce the message. 6. Sell the story through your press release. Remember that the journalist may only read the first few paragraphs to get a quick impression, so cover the 5 W’s. 7. Try to think of a clever picture idea to illustrate your story. 8. If the journalist wants to follow up the story, who can they interview? 9. Make sure your press release reaches the journalist in time. Phone to check when their deadlines are. 10. If you spot an ongoing issue that’s of concern to the community, think about approaching the local press to run a campaign to help you get your message across.
