Informability

Informability is a term coined by the Central Office of Information (COI) to describe the principle of ensuring that information is made accessible to as wide an audience as possible, including people with literacy problems, sensory impairment or learning difficulties. The Informability Unit, set up by COI, offers advice on how best to communicate effectively with such
audiences.

COI Informability offers practical assistance and advice on producing
publicity material in a wide range of formats, including:

·        audio tape

·        large print

·        Braille

·        computer disc

·        video (using British Sign Language and subtitling).

The Informability Manual is a good-practice manual produced by the Informability Unit.
It contains:

·        outlines of the conditions that can hinder a person's ability to access information;

·        general guidelines on communication techniques which help ensure the largest possible audience is reached;

·        descriptions of the various media that can facilitate access for different groups;

·        a glossary of terms, including recommendations on how, and in some cases how not, to use them.
