The British Crime Survey shows that relatively few people know anything about Local Crime and Disorder Partnerships.

This is a cause of some concern. One of the key reasons why Partnerships were created was to ensure that Crime and Disorder agencies took account of the concerns of their communities when devising local strategies for reducing crime. It was hoped that Partnerships would play a leading role in getting communities engaged in identifying the causes of local crime problems and working together to find solutions.

The British Crime Survey also tells us that most people think that fighting crime is the job of the police and no one else. Few people have any notion of the role of other crime reduction agencies, and little appreciation of the role wider partners like local government, business and the public themselves might play.

There is a job to be done to building awareness of Local Partnerships and in embracing the local community as part of these partnerships

Events, exhibitions and roadshows are an effective method of taking that message out into the community and establishing closer contacts. They are a powerful and influential way to build and sustain greater awareness, understanding and co-operation.
