The Welsh Language Act

The Welsh Language Act 1993 places an obligation on the public sector to treat the Welsh and English languages on the basis of equality in the provision of services to the public in Wales. The Act applies to public bodies such as local authorities, health trusts, courts and government agencies and departments (including organisations outside Wales) that provide services to people in Wales. In addition, private or voluntary organisations providing services to the public on behalf of a statutory body have to comply with the requirements of that body’s language scheme.

This means that communications material produced by crime and disorder reduction partnerships should be bilingual, in both English and Welsh. The Welsh Language Board produces A guide to bilingual design, which can be downloaded from its website or ordered from the address below.
