Audit or Formative Research:

Time spent on research at the start of the communication planning process is often the most valuable. It is an essential stage in preparing the foundations upon which objectives and tactical solutions can be built.

It helps to:

  • Establish and clarify aims and objectives

  • Identify needs

  • Define target audiences – their orientation and knowledge/attitude baselines

  • Identify barriers to implementation

  • Identify channels and media formats

  • Refine messages  - ensure they are understood

  • Anticipate possible unforeseen outcomes

  • Provide an early warning system
