What does an effective strategy look like?

Although each local area is different, with its own circumstances and challenges to be considered, an effective communications strategy should always include:

  • aims

  • objectives

  • key messages

  • key audiences

  • channels (TV, radio, newspapers, posters, internet, etc.)

  • targets (which should be timetabled)

  • the responsibilities of each partner agency

  • resources (financial, structural and staff)

  • links with the partnership’s community involvement work

  • systems for review and evaluation

All strategies should be seen as a long-term investment.  A rolling communications programme, incorporating different communications channels, which reinforce each other, will have more impact and more chance of getting its messages across than a series of short-term, unconnected bursts of activity.
