Please find enclosed this month's Crime Reduction Website monthly bulletin. We've tried to include the best of what's been added to the site in this busy month.
Anti-social Behaviour
The single biggest package of measures to tackle anti-social behaviour has come into force. The measures are contained in the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003. Also implemented recently, the Criminal Justice Act 2003 provides new measures enabling more police officers to get back on the beat, and gives police greater powers on crime and anti-social behaviour. Also out this month is a research report looking at the implementation and effectiveness of Acceptable Behaviour Contracts.
Drugs in the Community
The Communities Against Drugs Toolkit has been totally updated and re-written. It gives information on the latest development research findings, and approaches to tackling drug problems and their supply routes. Nacro have also published research findings on behalf of the Birmingham Drug Action Team that consider substance related services to address young people's needs.
Criminal Justice System
We've had a number of publications pass across our desks that are related to improving the criminal justice system - especially with respect to helping vulnerable or intimidated witnesses.

Youth
We've also seen the publication of several reports looking at young people - both young people as offenders and young people as victims. The National Audit Office report having seen considerable improvements in tackling youth crime, and new guidelines have been published for issuing on-the-spot fines to young people. On the children as victim side, the Thomas Coram Institute have published a review of research and legislation on their commercial sexual exploitation.

Our student victimisation mini-site has been set up to provide information on all aspects of student victimisation, crime awareness campaigns, research, and related links.
Quarterly Crime Statistics: January 2004
The new Government quarterly crime statistics for the year to September 2003 show overall crime has remained fairly stable, yet there have been significant increases in violent crime.
