*** July's bulletin begins ***
Welcome to this month's bulletin of new material on the Crime Reduction Website.
Annual Crime Statistics
Crime in England & Wales has been published today - as you may well have heard on new bulletins this morning. Recorded crime is slightly up and BCS crime figures are down. You can read our summary and view the full report from the link below.
Confident Communities in a Secure Britain
Having been all over the news at the start of the week, the Home Office's plan for the next 4 year's must be this month's must-read item for everyone working in crime reduction. It shifts the focus to be more inclusive of communities and promoting active citizenship. We've summarised all 130 pages down to 3 pages of the most important facts.
Also published this month was a review of active communities. Amongst its findings were rises in the levels of community participation and stable levels of 'formal volunteering.
Identity Theft
ID Theft and credit card fraud is big business these days. The advent of new Chip-and-PIN cards aims to significantly reduce this, but a new guide from APACS tells you what you can do now to reduce the chance of become a victim of card fraud.
Binge Drinking
Another hot topic this summer has been binge drinking. This survey of 18-24 year-olds looks at attitudes to drinking amongst young people, their drinking habits, and their involvement in anti-social acts while under the influence.
Young People
We've also found 3 items this month that deal with the involvement of 'at risk' young people in their communities. These are the people most likely to go on and become prolific offenders. The Jospeh Rowntree Foundation has published all 3 reports.
Criminal Justice System
We've also seen a rash of publications on victims, witnesses and the criminal justice system this month. The following all represent recent findings.
Mini-sites
A couple of updates to our series of Mini-sites have been made this month. A significant addition to the Domestic Violence Mini-site is a DV Helpdesk that answers many of the most commonly received questions on the topic. We've also added a Crime Reduction Centre Mini-site with details of all courses currently available from the Hawkhills.
