*** October's bulletin begins ***
In this month's bulletin we seem to have something of a communities special, with a number of helpful new practical guidance documents being published to increase community engagement and make neighbourhood renewal easier.
Communities
We've seen several documents published this month on the topics of neighbourhoods and community cohesion. ODPM have published a pair of guides on building communities. Building Community Cohesion is aimed at residents and community leaders and provides them with a set of easy to understand guidelines on building their community. Facilitating Community Involvement is aimed more at policy-makers and deals provides 'what works' information and a guide to barriers to community involvement
Also published by ODPM, the Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment Manual provides a 10-point program to help practitioners decide on the best type of project to improve neighbourhood renewal, and how to implement this project effectively.
The Home Office has published an evaluation of Community Support Officers and specifically the effectiveness of their power to detain suspects for up to 30 minutes pending the arrival of a police officer.
In addition to these new publications, the community training pack Crime Reduction Basics has been made available in a range of languages: Arabic, Chinese, Gujerati, Hindi, Hungarian, Punjabi, Urdu and Welsh.
Working with offenders
Information on the 'Prevent and Deter' strand of the Priority & Prolific Offenders Strategy was published at the end of September. You can find out more about this and the rest of the PPO programme at the address below.
Also published this month is an evaluation of the Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme by the Youth Justice Board. The programme deals with the most serious and persistent young offenders and aims to reduce the level and seriousness of their re-offending by a combination of monitoring and structured activities.
