Partnerships

The Government's recent announcement on modernising the police force, focusing on local delivery and standards, also included an announcement of a review of the Crime & Disorder Act 1998 - specifically Sections 5-7, Section 17 & Section 115. Find out more by following the link below. Also published this month was guidance for Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnerships wanting to merge.

Statistics

Late October saw the publication of a range of quarterly statistical updates. Primary among these was the quarterly update of BCS and recorded crime figures, but we've also published updated stats on ASBOs issued, on of the first sets of stats related specifically to distraction burglary, and a comparison of crime rates from 8 countries (including UK).

Burglary

An interesting report published earlier this month looked at offenders' perspective on burglary - particularly their attitude to risk and when they considered they might be caught. Published at the same time was a report on he growing problem of car key theft and using burglary to obtain car keys as a method of defeating the increased sophistication of car immobilisers.

Anti-social behaviour

Both the LGA and the Home Office have published documents on ASB, the experience of ASB by members of the public, and best ways to tackle ASB.

Violence

We've also had sight of two recently published documents on crime and violence. The first, commissioned by Bridge House Trust, looks at the growing use of knives by young people. The second, from the Home Office (and originally published earlier this year), outlines potential interventions to reduce night-time violence looking separately at offenders, victims and locations as the subject of the intervention.

Fear of crime

The final theme we've highlighted this month is fear of crime. Two major reports on policing and the fear of crime were published in early November. The first looks at 4 key strands of reassurance policing, and the second gives a practical review of interventions that have been demonstrated to work (or not work) to reduce community fear of crime.
