Queen's Speech 2006

The new session of Parliament started earlier this month. We've summarised the 3 proposed Bills with crime reduction elements from the Queen's Speech.

Criminal Damage Mini-site

We've published a new Mini-site this month on the topic of Criminal Damage. You can use it to find out the most recent facts and figures on the topic, together with good practice guides, frequently asked questions and information on the Tilley Awards.

Consultations

The Government has published two sets of proposals this month with implications for crime reduction practitioners. Making Sentencing Clearer looks at, among other things, reducing the number of custodial sentences for minor offences. Strengthening powers to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB) is concerned with greater use of penalty notices for disorder and powers to close nuisance premises to reduce the incidence and effects of ASB.

On a related note, the government has also this month issued a summary of responses to the consultation on financial and organised crime published earlier this year.

Crime statistics

The former Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, asked an independent panel to examine the published crime statistics and how they could be changed to make them better understood and better trusted by the public. The panel has published it's report and has focussed on frequent publishing of very local data as the key to greater public understanding.

Criminal Careers

This Home Office research report looks in the offending patterns of over 400 males in South London. From the patterns that emerge, the report streeses the importance of early interventions to reduce early offending, and suggests changes to the way in which custodial sentences are applied.

National Community Safety Network (NCSN) survey

NCSN are asking for 10-15 minutes of your time to help complete their survey of national trends in community safety.
