New crime strategy
The Home Office has announced a new strategy for crime reduction - Cutting crime: A new partnership 2008-11. The new strategy focuses on 7 themes:
- Stronger focus on serious violence
- Continued pressure on anti-social behaviour
- Renewed focus on young people
- New national approach to designing out crime
- Continuing to reduce re-offending
- Greater sense of national partnership
- Freeing up local partners, building public confidence
Further, and to support Neighbourhood Policing, from July 2008 straightforward street-by-street local crime information will be made available on the internet. Find out more in our summary:
Crime in England & Wales 2006-07
Crime in England & Wales is a document that combines both Recorded Crime Statistics (crime recorded by the police) and the British Crime Survey (crime as experienced by people - gathered from surveys) into a single document that will make comparisons between the two easier, and give a more complete picture of crime. Crime in England & Wales, which provides data for the period April 2006 - March 2007, was published on 19 July. The crime survey shows that overall crime rates held steady in England and Wales over the past year, continuing the long-term trend. Police recorded crime rates showed violent crime rates fell by 1% over the last year - the first fall in that category in eight years. Vandalism was the only recorded crime category to show a statistically significant increase over the year - reports increased by 10%. However, even with that increase, reports of vandalism are still lower now than they were in 1995.
Delivering PSA1
We also have a new Mini-site available on the site. It highlights what's being done to ensure that the target of reducing crime by 18% by March 2008 is met. It also includes details of how to run a 'Week of Action' local crime blitz, and a set of Frequently Asked Questions on the topic of PSA1 and related activity.
Tilley Awards
The Tilley Award, funded by the Home Office, was set up in 1999 to encourage and recognise excellence in crime reduction using problem-oriented principles. This year is the 9th annual award for excellence in problem orientated partnerships and crime reduction. Following a record number of entries, 12 shortlisted projects and 3 finalists have been selected - summaries of all of these can be found on our Tilley Awards page. The overall winner of the Tilley Award 2007 will be announced at the 2007 POP Conference which takes place in Birmingham on 4-6 September.
Website changes
Those of you who have been on the website recently may have noticed a few changes to the site. We've refreshed the design a little and changed around the way our search works. Another change currently taking place in the background is an update to our main website address. From the Autumn we will no longer be www.crimereduction.gov.uk ; our new address will www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk . Please take a moment to update your bookmarks. We'll be running an information campaign later in the summer as a further reminder of the change.
