National Police Steering Group for Watch Issues (NPSGWI)

Purpose of NPSGWI:

To bring Watch police staff working with Watch schemes together to consider issues contained in the ToR.

NPSGWI ToR:

  • Helping develop national policy
  • Capturing, developing and disseminating good practice for Watch schemes, particularly involving high crime/deprivation areas, younger people and ethnic minorities
  • Listening and seeking views on Watch issues from the regional groups
  • Providing guidance and advice to forces
  • Influencing other stakeholders
  • Helping develop a training framework and materials to assist police staff involved in Watch schemes
  • Helping develop formal links with the Neighbourhood Policing Programme
  • Identifying and developing formal links between Watch schemes and CDRPs
  • Helping develop links to other Watch groups

Membership: Regional representatives from each of the 10 Government regions. Chief Constables Executive Asistant provides secretariat. Mark Custerson is officer to the Group. Chief Constable Frank Whiteley is the Chair and represents the Police Service on the NSGWI. Representatives may also bring up two additional people to the meeting from each region. Hannah Panayiotou and Marry Garry (Home Office) have a standing invitation to attend.

Frequency of meetings: Suggested twice per year.

Agenda items: Standing items to include structural report from regions, good practice and issues of concern.

Venue: Hertfordshire Police HQ, Welwyn Garden City.
