This briefing paper looks at the emphasis (or lack thereof) placed upon alcohol-related crime in local audit and strategy documents. It raises the issue of the involvement of alcohol in a significant percentage of crimes of various types but highlights the lack of evidence of a causal relationship between alcohol consumption and criminal activity. It notes that 40% of audit documents highlighted drunkenness as an issue, 60% related public order problems to alcohol, 9% highlighted a link between alcohol and domestic violence, and 5% linked alcohol consumption and vandalism.
