Designated Public Place Orders (DPPOs): Guidance for Local Authorities in England and Wales.
This guide explains the powers given to Local Authorities in England and Wales to introduce Designated Public Place Orders (DPPOs). DPPO powers enable Local Authorities to designate places where restrictions on public drinking apply. The purpose of this guidance is to set out examples of good practice which Local Authorities may wish to follow.
Tackling fireworks misuse: A practitioners' guide
Fireworks are enjoyed responsibly by thousands of people up and down the country every year. They can be used on all sorts of occasions, but they are primarily used to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night, Diwali, New Year’s Eve and the Chinese New Year. Unfortunately, a small minority of people use fireworks irresponsibly and cause serious nuisance within their local communities. An even smaller minority sometimes use fireworks as weapons to harass and injure other individuals.
Code of good practice for public access to local crime information for Police Forces and Authorities in England and Wales
Providing access to crime information for local residents is a key part of the government's crime strategy. That committment is part of a wider agenda to strengthen the connection between residents and police, and to enhance local accountability. This code sets out the minimum standards all forces will be expected to meet.
Working with the third sector to reduce re-offending: Securing effective partnerships 2008-2011
This paper outlines the importance of the third sector in meeting the Government's objectives in reducing re-offending. It makes clear the commitment that Government is making towards the third sector and sets out how Government will cosult widely with the third sector and community and faith groups in drawing up principles and expectations placed upon the Minitry of Justice and NOMS (National Offender Management Service) in their relationships with third sector organisations.
Neighbourhood Policing in Rural Communities
This guide is one in a series produced by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) Neighbourhood Policing Programme Team and is designed to assist practitioners at all levels in the service to deliver and sustain Neighbourhood Policing within rural communities. It will support you in identifying and addressing neighbourhood priorities, improving engagement and delivering safer neighbourhoods where people are confident that police and partners are working with them to deal with the issues that really matter.

It's our space - A guide for community groups working to improve public space
The government is keen for community groups to have greater control over how the local environment is managed and improved. It has set out clear agendas on these issues to make open spaces cleaner, safer and greener. Over the past few years, a range of grants and funding programmes have been made available for community groups to become involved in improving outdoor spaces. With the help of the Big Lottery Fund and other funding bodies this looks set to continue. This guide is intended to help community groups to get the best out of their outdoor spaces, and to help maximise the impact of their efforts on the ground

Reviewing the work of parish and town councils in reducing crime
In 2006 the Commission for Rural Communities undertook an evaluation into approaches to tackling rural crime. This reviewed the extent of recent reforms to reduce rural crime and fear of crime had been successful. Part of this evaluation included surveys of parish and town councils. This paper reports on the findings. It includes good practice case examples and recommendations.
The National Community Safety Plan 2006-09
Crime in general and violent crime in particular are falling. So is the fear of crime. But they all remain too high. If communities are to be made still safer, everyone - from the heart of national government, through regional and local partners, right through to neighbourhoods and the people who live in them - must play their part. The National Community Safety Plan (NCSP) was published in November 2005 to help achieve this. The NCSP has been well received by key partners and stakeholders who have valued the clarity the Plan has brought to the community safety agenda. To build on this, an Update to the NCSP was issued in November 2006.
Getting it Right: Collaborative Problem Solving For Criminal Justice in the U.S.
This guide spells out a practical team-based approach to building the kind of criminal justice system a community wants, assessing the current system, and planning and implementing strategies for 'getting it right'. Five sections comprise this manual: an overview of a comprehensive planning process; establishing the policy team and the process; keeping the focus on outcomes; building an understanding of your system; and moving from understanding to change.
Introducing the new 101 service
101 is the new national telephone number being introduced for community safety issues, including non-emergency crime, policing and anti-social behaviour. It is being launched in three 'waves' across England and Wales
Solutions to address gang crime
This suite of information tools, made available by the US Department of Justice, provides assistance for both practitioners and communities in trying to identify and reduce gang crime. It includes suggested law enforcement activities to reduce gang crime, data on gang activity in different populations, the criminal activity of gangs and general gang statistics. For parents, there are also quick reference cards in 4 languages to help identify and discourage gang behaviour amongst children.
Respect Action Plan
The Government has launched a major new initiative to "rebuild the bonds of community" - the Respect agenda. The agenda focuses on 6 strands of work: supporting families, a new approach to the most challenging families, improving behaviour and attendance in schools, activities for children & young people, strengthening communities and effective enforcement & community justice.

Passport to Community Engagement
This book is designed as a 'beginners guide' to community engagement. It aims to provide a starting point rather than a detailed step-by-step guide. It has been written for those of you who are working in the areas of crime reduction and drug prevention; Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs); and Drug Action Teams (DATs). Some of the ideas will also be useful if you work with communities on alcohol-related issues.
Together We Can - Action plan to bring communities and government closer together
A new action plan to bring Government agencies and the public closer has been published on 28 June 2005 as part of a drive to empower local communities and improve quality of life. The Together We Can plan sets out the Government's commitment to citizens, communities and public bodies working together to set and achieve common goals. It outlines eight key policy areas - including safety, justice and regeneration - to be carried out by twelve Government Departments to strengthen citizens' engagement in delivering success across those policies. The 65 action points in the plan represent the start of this work.

Tackling fear of crime & disorder in the community
Tackling Fear of Crime and Disorder in the Community" is designed to encourage individuals and groups to get involved in reducing crime and disorder and fear of crime in their community. This guidance has been developed using a combination of information taken from the fear of crime toolkit and "Crime Reduction Basics – Tackling Crime and ASB in the Community". A wide range of people, from youth groups through to the older community can use the guidance. Rather than looking at reducing fear of crime problems in general, our aim is to look at the impact of crime and anti-social behaviour as drivers for fear in the community, and ways in which you can become involved in reducing crime and disorder and thereby reduce fear as a consequence.
