Updated Drugs Strategy 2002

The Home Office has published an updated drug strategy, which focuses on delivery and evidence of what works on the ground. The new strategy updates the 1998 strategy and is being published alongside research about levels and costs of drug use.

Justice for All

A radical and wide-ranging programme of reform for the Criminal Justice System was published in the Government White Paper, "Justice for All", on 17 July 2002. It sets out a coherent, long-term strategy to modernise the Criminal Justice System (CJS) from end to end - from detection to rehabilitation of offenders - with a clear focus on fighting and reducing crime.

Narrowing the justice gap

The justice gap – the difference between the number of crimes which are recorded and the number which result in their perpetrator being brought to justice – is the key measure of the effectiveness of the criminal justice system, and a crucial indicator of success in reducing crime. This is why the Government has set a new target to bring 1.2 million offences to justice by 2005- 06.

Home Office Drugs Minister, Bob Ainsworth provided a summary of the Government's strategy against drugs while giving evidence on 12 February 2002, to the Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the Government's drug strategy. His comments provide a good review of current action and thinking on tackling drugs and crime.

Crime Reduction Training Review

The review of crime reduction training represents one of the steps the Government are taking to raise the performance of crime and disorder reduction partnerships. Home Office Ministers requested the review in 2001. It was carried out in consultation with key stakeholders, training providers and others with the aim of developing a strategy for crime reduction training. There was also a review of existing literature, consultancy and inspection reports and the exercise culminated in a conference in London in May 2001.
