Community Support Officer (Detention Power) Pilot

The Police Reform Act 2002 gives new Community Support Officers the power to detain someone they suspect has committed an offence for up to 30 minutes. When this power was first introduced there was concern that it might not be practical or useful to enforce. A pilot was established in 6 areas to evaluate the operation of the new power. This Home Office report builds on the findings of 3 teams to produce an economic evaluation of the Reducing Burglary Initiative (RBI) projects. The researchers explore the evidence that has been gathered on costs and benefits across the projects, review some of the limitations of the methods used, and make some suggestions about the direction in which the developing methodology can be pushed forward. Overall the analysis indicates the RBI is a cost efficient and intervention effective programme.

Strategic Development Projects in the Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands and Eastern regions

This report summarises the findings of a project evaluation of 21 Strategic Development Projects (SDPs) in the East Midlands, East, and Yorkshire and the Humber Government Office regions. There appeared a varied project success level, with only a 6 projects associated with significant burglary reductions in their target areas. Further, there was little support for a prevention strategy focused on preventing repeat victimisation.

Effectiveness of Town Centre CCTV

This study attempts to assess if crime prevention is the main reason for the existence of town centre CCTV in Gillingham. It examines crime statistics from Gillingham for five years post CCTV - in contrast to many recent studies which on examine a 12-month post-implementation period - and compares these to a similar control area with no CCTV over the same time period.
