Street Crime Intitiative- Research Evaluation
Before the Street Crime Initiative
Recorded robbery fell by 11% in England and Wales in 2002/03. Taking into account the impact of the National Crime Recording Standard (NCRS) on recording practices, the reduction in robbery is 14%. There were 17% fewer robberies in the ten police force areas covered by the Street Crime Initiative (SCI), comparing 2002/03 with 2001/02, with over 17,000 fewer offences in the ten forces in the Street Crime Initiative compared to 2001/02.
There has been a number of Research Publications looking at the impact of the Street Crime Initiative but previously the Home Office conducted a piece of research that examined the nature of robbery in England and Wales, specifically focusing on personal robbery. The nature of personal robbery presented findings that were based primarily on data collected from over 2,000 crime reports and witness statements across seven police force areas in England and Wales.
Published at the same time and supporting this research was Tackling personal robbery: lessons learnt from the police and community partnerships which reports the findings of a review to examine the effectiveness of both operational policing and partnership led initiatives and strategies designed to reducethe incidents of personal robbery. Much of the work was undertaken prior to the SCI and focused on the work of 5 police forces (Metropolitan Police, West Midlands, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire)
Research and Statistics from the SCI
Street Crime Initiative: Figures to the End of September 2002 provided full figures for two key indicators of initial progress of the SCI -a comparison with the period immediately before the Initiative began, and a direct comparison with the same period last year. The figures show that, since the start of the Initiative, street crime had declined by 16% during the period April compared with September. For robbery, the more serious offence, the number of offences in September is 25% lower than March for the 10 forces as a whole. The figures also show that, when compared to the same period last year, there has been a reduction in robbery of 10%.
A full evaluation of the impact of the SCI is provided in Tackling Robbery: Practical Lessons From The Street Crime Initiative which was published in July 2006
