Seasonal Crime Calendar

Seasonal Crime Calendar

The Seasonal Crime Calendar and the information on these related pages aim to highlight national trends in seasonal crime and provide practitioners with a prompt to analyse whether these statistical peaks are also reflected locally and then plan an effective and timely response.

How to use this page
To see the calendar pages simply click on the month you wish to view below. To read the full project description for each Tilley case study click on the project name in the middle column. Evidence of trends
The findings are based upon the Home Office report 'Seasonality in recorded crime: preliminary findings' published in January 2007.

Effective Practice Tilley Awards case studies
Project entries to the 2007 Tilley Awards have been used as case studies to demonstrate how crime reduction and community safety practitioners have tackled these crime peaks locally. You can read more about the Tilley Awards here and access summaries of the 12 entries short listed for 2007. These and many other local examples of effective practice can also be found in the Ideas Exchange. Please do add any details of projects you have completed and evaluated recently so your experiences can be shared with fellow practitioners.

National vs Local Crime Trends
Remember these peaks are at national level so some crimes may not be a problem in your area at the suggested time of the year or you may have a different  set of seasonal peaks depending on the geographic nature of your area. The purpose of the calendar is to serve as a prompt to consider the crime types but nothing is more important than proper analysis of your area and engaging with the local community to find out what the real issues are.

Forward Planning
Crime types are featured roughly two months in advance of the actual recorded peak e.g. domestic burglary which peaks in the winter months represents the month of November. This is to allow practitioners time to carry out local analysis of data and determine whether these national peaks are also reflected locally in which case an appropriate response can be planned following the problem solving principles. A range of general crime prevention posters and information leaflets are available to use in local awareness campaigns for free. Click here to view the latest version of the publicity catalogue.

Find out more
This year only a limited number of hard backed desk calendars were produced as a trial run to establish if they would be a useful tool for practitioners. All copies have now been distributed to a variety of agencies within the community safety field. If you would like to obtain a copy of next year's calendar running from September 2008 to August 2009 or have any comments on the calendar or web page please click here to e-mail us

Online Expert Chart
In connection with the seasonal crime calendar we will be holding a monthly 'Online Expert Chat' with each month focussing on a different crime peak. The chats allow you to share effective practice with other like minded practitioners around England and Wales, find out  what new things are happening as well as putting questions to an expert panel.

Click here to view transcripts of chats that have already taken place and to find out what topics are coming up in the next few months. The schedule is subject to change and we envisage that more topics will be added so do keep checking regularly. E-mail us to let us know the latest burning issue in your area and make suggestions for new topics.
