16. Are there any formatting rules?

Formatting of the application form is important and any entries that do not comply with the following rules will be returned to the project author and may therefore miss the deadline for the competition:

  • The application form should be submitted as a Word document (Version 97 onwards).
  • Font must be Arial, size 10.
  • Spacing should be regular not double spaced.
  • File size not to exceed 1MB (excluding endorsing letter but including the summary). This may restrict use of graphs/photos as they use a substantial amount of memory.
  • Word number restrictions (400 maximum for the summary and a further 4,000 maximum for the description) will be checked and any applications which exceed the maximum limits will be returned to the project author for amendment and rejected from the competition.

17. Are footnotes and annexes permitted?

Footnotes and annexes are not permitted; all evidence which supports the project must be included in the main body of the application.

The only exception is a bibliography (Harvard style of referencing only) which will not be included in the word count limit. If the Bibliography takes the entry over the permissible file size it should be emailed separately so that the application is not blocked by the Home Office email system.

18. Are recordings or other media allowed?

Whilst graphs and photos can be useful in explaining elements of the project other audio visual materials e.g. video clips, radio adverts or posters over A4 in size etc should not be included. The application will be judged on the text descriptions of the project and the learning at each of the four stages within the SARA model. However this kind of material will certainly add value to the workshops which all award winners will be asked to present at the UK POP Conference. The overall application should be no bigger than 1Mb and applicants should carefully consider the amount of graphics take.

Scanned newspaper clippings, posters etc are permitted and will not contribute towards the word count .

Email applications received will be acknowledged by an automatic email. If no response is received, please check with the Tilley Awards Team that the form has been received; it is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that the application has been received prior to the closing deadline. Any entries over the size limit of 1MB will not be delivered through the Home Office email system.

Once all entries have been received and registered on the system, a reference number will be sent to each application author. Please quote this reference number in any interim correspondence about the awards.
