12 Tilley Awards 2009 finalists receive national recognition
All twelve finalists entered into the 2009 Tilley Awards competition received national recognition and were presented with certificates at the UK Problem Oriented Partnership Conference which took place on 5th and 6th of October. The national finalists comprised an entry from each of the 9 Government Office regions, Wales, the best of the rest of the UK entries and this year's winner of violence against women stand alone category.
| Charlton Athletic Social Inclusion Programme is the 2009 regional winner for the South East. The project engages children at risk of exclusion from school and becoming involved with anti-social behaviour and youth crime. With the help of coaches from the league one football club, coaching sessions were set up in areas around Kent and soon developed into wider community projects which engaged 2000 young people. The areas where the projects were set up saw a 25% drop in reports of anti-social behaviour and reduced the exclusion rates amonst participants. ![]() | The Corby Jam Team is the 2009 regional winner for the East Midlands. The project adopted a multi-agency approach to tackling anti-social behaviour and criminal damage which was identified as a major concern by residents in the Corby area. With a team of police officers and youth workers it engaged residents and 312 young people over 12 months and improved perceptions of crime among younger and older residents. ![]() | Glebe Farm anti-social behaviour project is the 2009 regional winner for the West Midlands. The Safer Birmingham partnership took top spot for the West Midlands for its operation to tackle anti-social behaviour by young people on the Glebe Farm Estate in Birmingham. As well as increasing police resources, introducing a dispersal zone and issuing ASBOS to troublemakers, the partnership also set up youth projects including contact with families, increased drug diversionary activities and increased investment in the area's community centre. ![]() | The Sports Lincs project is the 2009 regional winner for Yorkshire and Humber. A joint initiative was set up in 2007 to disrupt youth crime among 13 to 17 year olds. The project was a joint initiative involving the police, local council and Grimsby Town FC's Football in the Community. Since its launch the project has engaged 2000 young people with around 1000 young people attending activities which include street dance and football each week. ![]() | The Traffic Light System project is the 2009 winning entry from Wales. The project was set up by authorities in Cardiff to tackle alcohol related crime and disorder among the city's busy nightlife. Licensed premises were allocated points on the basis of the number of alcohol related crime and disorder incidents, underage sales and hospital admissions linked to them. They were then graded on a three tier basis and those on red were assigned a dedicated officer to develop action plans and implement them. A Cardiff University study found the system had contributed to sustained and significant reductions in alcohol related disorder. ![]() | Tout and You're Out is the 2009 regional winner for London. The project was set up to crack down on ticket touts working in Merton and neighbouring boroughs during the Wimbledon tennis tournament which was leading to an increase in fraud and associated crime. Police introduced a dispersal zone, one of the first of its kind for this type of issue, sent letters to known touts warning them to stay away, published pictures of them and increased patrols. As a result, the area saw a drop in frauds, numbers of arrests and stop and searches after previously experiencing year on year increases. | Photograph not available at present | The KJETS project in Ballymacash, Northern Ireland is the 2009 winner for the rest of the uk category. Set up in May 2005, the project is aimed at supporting young people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity (ADHD) Disorder to help them aviod becoming involved in crime. The successful scheme has been expanded across the area and similar groups are now running in Banbridge, Londonderry and Craigavon. ![]() | The Taverham Massive Youth Club project is the 2009 regional winner for the East of England. It was set up by Broadland Community Safety Partnership after identifying the need to address anti-social behaviour among young people on Friday nights as a priority. Working with the local parish council, youth services, schools and businesses the partnership set up a youth club to run diversionary activities. After its launch calls to police relating to anti-social behaviour dropped by 59% in 2007/08 when compared with the same period in 2006/07. ![]() | Operation Equinox is the 2009 regional winner for the North East. The project was set up to address a rise in anti-social behaviour and criminal damage during the Equinox period. The operation used a combination of education, diversion and prevention approaches to improve the quality of life for local residents. ![]() | Hull Domestic Abuse Partnership is the 2009 Violence Against Women category winner. The project was set up in 2005 to tackle domestic violence in the city following research carried out by Citysafe CDRP to determine why crime often goes under-reported and what could be done to improve the situation. Since its launch, the partnership, which works with police, housing, health and family services to provide a joined up service for victims of domestic violence, has supported over 5920 women and their children. ![]() | The Engage Team is the 2009 regional winner for the North West. The project was set up to consider why Lancashire Constabulary's Eastern Division had high numbers of children going missing from home for short periods of time and put at risk of sexual abuse. The team includes police officers, social workers, social workers and sexual health workers from statutory and third sector organisations. ![]() | Operation Fragment is the 2009 regional winner for the South West. The project was set up by Avon and Somerset Police to tackle a rise in metal thefts in Somerset, particularly at schools, churches and other community buildings. Working with local councils and scrap dealers officers identified at risk areas and gave presentations to likely victimes on how to improve security. Test sales were carried out on metal dealers and intelligence led checks were carried out on suspicious vehicles. The initiative has led to an impressive reduction of metal thefts across the area.
