Crime Reduction - Helping to Reduce Crime in Your Area

The Tilley Awards for Problem-Oriented Partnerships

Introduction

Welcome to the Tilley Awards section of the Crime Reduction website. This part of the site has been developed to tell you all you need to know about the Tilley Awards.

Background

The Tilley Awards, set up by the Home Office in 1999, celebrate local initiatives that can demonstrate three things:

  1. the use of a problem solving model
  2. partnership working
  3. measurable impact on crime reduction or community safety issues.

The Tilley Awards focus on a problem solving approach that is known as SARA. This involves Scanning for problems that are a priority for the local community; Analysing available evidence sources such as local crime data, local intelligence obtained from strategic and delivery partners and feedback from the local community; Developing the best Response to address the problem; and Assessing the impact of that response.

A more detailed explanation of the SARA problem solving model, provided by Professor Nick Tilley (after whom the award is named) is available here .
