Alcohol Related Disorder

The Criminal Justice and Police Bill gives local authorities the power to designate public areas in which it will become an offence to drink alcohol after being required by a police officer not to do so. Only public areas where disorder or nuisance is associated with public drinking will be designated.

The provision is one of a number of measures designed to reduce the alcohol-related disorder that adds to crime and the fear of crime, particularly in town centres. Other key actions include:

  • greater use of information sharing schemes to keep troublemakers from pubs and clubs

  • promotion of good practice in preventing alcohol-related problems on licensed premises.

  • support for the development of local integrated strategies for tackling alcohol-related crime and associated disorder.

A summary of proposals in the Criminal Justice and Police Bill is at www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200001/cmbills/031/en/01031x--.htm
